Blasting is done for many reasons, on a variety of surfaces, intended to achieve different results, using several types of blasting equipment. Factoring in even more “variables” such as nozzle sizes and air pressure settings, there are no hard & fast rules in pressure blasting … only guidelines. Click here to view more general blast media and tank blaster information.
Blast Media Guidelines:
Sands & Slags
Inexpensive, used for general cleaning, cleaning dirty surfaces.
Material breaks down rapidly upon initial application.
Will leave anchor pattern on surfaces which helps paint adhesion after blasting
Round Glass Beads
Removes light coatings or oxidation where tolerance and finish must be maintained.
Use under low pressure for best results
Recycles well
Ground/Fractured Glass
Rapid cleaning without anchor pattern
Produces etching on metal surfaces with minimal dust
Moderately priced
Use at low or moderately low pressure
Alox Glass
Blended aluminum oxide and glass mixture
For production cleaning when surface tolerances and etching are not a concern
Used at low to moderately low pressure
Recycles well
Walnut Shells/Corn Cob Grit
Soft media for delicate surfaces such as jewelry, precious metals or aluminum
Generally used at very low pressure
For cleaning greasy parts, has absorbent qualities
Aluminum Oxide
Most aggressive media, fast cutting, sharp & hard. Will create deep surface profile.
Low to moderately low pressure needed. Adjust regulator for different results.
Breaks down slowly and each new fracture creates new cutting edge.
Steel Shot
Shot peens metal surfaces for increased durability and added wear resistance
Not used for cleaning, for surface preparation only
Used in mold work for finishing
Plastic Media
20/30 standard mesh, fast, safe & cost effective for surface cleaning & paint removal
Used on a variety of soft metals including aluminum & composite steels
Removes most coatings without damage associated with harder abrasives
